And the Oscar goes to…

Will the Black Swan (2010), Social Network (2010) or The King's Speech (2010) take home the Academy Award? It’s very seldom that so many quality films compete to get this prestigious prize from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Among those three films I will say that the Black Swan had the best climax, while the Social network was a surprising movie for all fans of social network and social media. The King's Speech had the best characters and especially Colin Firth was awesome as King Georg VI. He was convincing, and this film’s climax (when the new King holds his speech before WWII) was strong too.

Film: The Social Network (2010)

You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies

The movie explains how Mark Zuckerberg and his friends at Harvard created the social network Facebook. We see late night blogging and students borrowing algorithms and social ideas from each other. The conflicts in the movie are traditional (not only in Harvard and Stanford), but in any other university which teach informatics (read: Design vs. hard coders).

We can clearly see the enthusiastic agile development society using tools like Emacs editors and MySQL servers. The latter financed by hedge funds in Silicon Valley. For sure, Facebook would ever reach 500 million users without junk bond aid to those state-of-the-art servers.

I really recommend this movie!

The Black Swan (2010), and the OSCAR goes to...

Today the Black Swan is released in Norway. Some believe that this ballet film will bring home the Oscar; others believe that it will be the Social Network. It's time to find out!

Fantasia (the Walt Disney film from 1940)

For many years I really wanted to see this ambitious animated film. I bought the new 2010 digital revised version, so it’s possible to watch it in HDTV. Anyway, even this is a Disney classic that features ballet classics; I was somewhat a little disappointed. What really rescued this classic movie were the hippopotamuses dancing en pointe in tutus. That was awesome!

Content of the movie

  • Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
    • Johann Sebastian Bach – Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
  • Nutcracker Suite
    • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Nutcracker Suite Op. 71a
  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice
    • Paul Dukas – The Sorcerer's Apprentice
  • The Rite of Spring
    • Igor Stravinsky – The Rite of Spring
  • Intermission
    • Meet the Soundtrack
  • The Pastoral Symphony
    • Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 in F, Op.68 "Pastorale"
  • Dance of the Hours
    • Amilcare Ponchielli – La Gioconda: Dance of the Hours
  • Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria
    • Musical score
      • Modest Mussorgsky – Night on Bald Mountain

      • Franz Schubert – Ave Maria
Undecided

Colosseum in the winter

When I watched the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, it was heavy snow weather in Oslo. I just want to add this photo of Colosseum in heavy snow. It was chaos both in the subways as well as inside the Colosseum.

It seems that people in Oslo ever will get used to snow!

About Oslo Municipal Cinemas

Norway opens a new full digital 3-D cinema in Oslo – Ringen Kino. Some claims it to be the first all-digital multiplex in the Nordic countries! It is situated in Ringnes Park at Grünerløkka in Oslo.

Ringen Kino (Ring Cinema) has 925 seats divided in 6 theatres, where three is digital. Colosseum THX has 978 seats in the main theatre alone!

Will Ringen Kino be the new favourite, or will Colosseum, the world largest THX theatre, hold its position?

WALL-E

I watched the new Disney Pixar movie WALL-E at the world’s largest THX cinema, the Colosseum in Oslo. The plot is about the robot WALL-E, which has something many Artificial Intelligence gadgets, misses: A personality and reason. He is falling in love with the very clever robot Eve.

The funny thing is that many of those robots in the movie are on their way to learn human reason. At the same time they have kept their mechanical behaviour. This is indeed an excellent movie.

IMDb – Wall-E’s Plot  Huh

New Photo Albums of the Opera House

For those of us who are special interested in ballet and opera, it might be worth taking a closer look at our beautiful Opera House in Oslo.
