The history of opera in Norway began with Italian guest performances in the 18th century, but a permanent national stage only came with the establishment of the Norwegian Opera in 1958. Kirsten Flagstad was instrumental as the first director. Investment in opera in Norway is not limited to just the National Opera in Bjørvika in Oslo.
